Organizing

  • To save trips, place items that you want to move to another floor on the stairs leading to that floor, and whenever you go upstairs or downstairs, take an item or two with you.

  • Keep a household calendar - whether paper or digital - to keep track of upcoming appointments and to keep you and other household members from creating double bookings.

Paper Management

  • When sorting your mail, stand over a large trashcan and discard junkmail so it doesn't pile up.

  • When you have papers that you need to file, instead of stopping what you're doing to file a single paper, create an inbox close to your filing cabinets or drawers where you can stack items you need to file. Periodically - weekly or monthly - you can file the whole stack.

Memorabilia

  • If there are items of strong sentimental and/or monetary value that you're storing for loved ones, don't wait to pass them down. Gift these items on a birthday or holiday, and enjoy knowing that they're in safe hands. And you may free up storage space in the process.
